Music – Recovered

Dexter has been in the studio recording cover versions of his favorite songs. As the songs are finished they will be available for downloading here.

16 February 2010

I’ve got three more demo’s ready to listen to. Steve Mapstone came down to the farm at the end of January to lay down some bass lines for some of the old songs we used to play in Learner’s License and I’ve been able to get a few hours in the studio to get them to demo stage.

First up is the old Velvet Underground standard Rock and Roll from the Loaded LP. This was the first song Steve and I recorded way back when I got the Fostex X26 so I’ll whack up a link to that version as well. Be warned, the Fostex version was literally recorded minutes after we first plugged in the Fostex on day 1 so the mix is utter crap.

The new version is Steve on his Fender Precision an I’ve added the drums, guitars and vocals in the Lost Note Studio on the standard kit (Korg D1600, Baby Blue Bottle mic, Roland TD3 drumkit etc). My guitar is a 62 Reissue Strat, the amp was a Peavey Tweed 50 watt 2 x 12, rhythm on the clean channel, lead on the OD channel, mic’ed with an SM57.

Finally, for your listening pleasure is The Eighties. Steve again on Bass and Dexter doing the rest in The Lost Note Studio on the standard kit (Korg D1600, Baby Blue Bottle mic, Roland TD3 drumkit etc). My guitar is a 62 Reissue Strat, the amp was a Peavey Tweed 50 watt 2 x 12, rhythm on the clean channel, lead on the OD channel, mic’ed with an SM57. The keyboards are done on my Laptop Studio, it’s a softsynth version on the 80’s mainstay keyboard, the Yamaha DX-7.

This song is my journal from my political activist days back in the 80’s. I wasn’t too political until The 81 Springbok Tour but those events gave me, and a lot of other people, a much needed kick in the balls about the way politics shapes everything we do, see and hear. I joined a bunch of radicals and was soon selling the paper at demos. The 81 Tour was the catalyst for me picking up a camera and over the next decade I pretty much attended every protest I could get to and documented the resistance to the Me, I, Myself decade. The whole bucket is in here, Muldoon’s wage freeze, Bolger’s Voluntary Unionism Law, The Tour, New Labour, Nelson Mandela sans freedom, Reagan, Thatcher, the then ever present threat of world wide obliteration via nuclear madness, right up the Berlin Wall coming down. Enjoy!

Now that The Eighties audio track is done I can focus on the video for it, which will be a slideshow album of the photos I took during the decade, augmented with other images I’ve downloaded and saved of the other stars of the song

The Eighties (Demo Mix), 256 kbs mp3.

25th October 2009

I’ve got a new demo for youse fullahs. One, by U2. I did a rough demo of this when I had the studio upstairs which I liked but it was too raw. A bit of time has passed since then and I’ve had another go. This is a less rough demo which will need some tidying up on the guitar parts and a proper mix and mastering.

It’s me on all the instruments using the Lost Note standard kit (Korg D1600, Baby Blue Bottle mic, Roland TD3 drumkit etc). The acoustic guitaris an 84 Ibanez, the electric is a Leo Fender signature G&L ASAT. The amp was the Vox AC15. The bass guitar is a Made In Japan Fender Squier.

For the archivists the original demo is here:

This is just me on the Hofner using the Behringer C-1 mic for voice and guitar, recorded upstairs on the Zoom MRS8. If you listen carefully you can hear the fireplace flue rattling in the background when I hit the lower notes on the Hof, hence the shift downstairs.

This was recorded in September 2009 and produced and arranged by Warren Cate.

Warren also did the backing vocals, played bass and did the guitar in the right speaker channel. Dexter is on the main guitars and drums.

The main tracks for SOS were recorded at The Lost Note Studio in Waikaretu on a Zoom MRS8-CD and a Korg D1600. Dexter’s guitars are a 62 reissue strat and an Epiphone Les Paul with Alnico 2 pickups.

The effects on Dexter’s guitars are the Dexter Mods TS9 and a stock Hotcake through a Peavey Valve King amp mic’ed with a Shure SM57.

Vocals were recorded using a Baby Blue Bottle.
